Colombian Excelso Organic FairTrade Colombia is the second-largest producer of coffee in the world and the largest producer of washed and Arabica coffees. It’s well known for the high quality of its coffee, and about half of its exports come to the United States.  This excellent coffee is from Sierra Nevada De Santa Marta located within the isolated Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta coastal mountain range in Northern Colombia’s Magdalena Department.  The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountain range is part of the Colombian Andes and the world’s highest coastal mountain range with a highest peak of 18,700 ft (5700 m), located a mere 26 miles from the Caribbean coast. With an abundance of rich topsoil, annual rainfall of 160 in/year and year-round temperatures between 64 – 84° F, the region is very well-suited for the production of high grade arabica coffee.   The high altitudes (1,000 – 1,600 masl) and rich soil have made the coffees from the this region some of the best and highest awarded coffees in Colombia and around the world. Café de Sierra Nevada De Santa Marta has medium acidity, full body, and notes of nuts and chocolate. It’s smooth, rich, dark, and never bitter. “Excelso” is a grading term for exportable coffee from Colombia, not related to variety or cupping profile. EP (European Preparation) specifies that the raw beans are all hand sorted to remove any defective beans and foreign material.   Excelso coffee beans are large, but slightly smaller than Supremo coffee beans.  Excelso beans are a screen size of 15-16, versus screen 17 Supremo beans.
